A quick run down of the four days of play at the 2009 Tour Partners' Championship (TPC) staged at Ikoyi Club (1938) Golf section in Lagos.
Day 1
Enter the Togolese who were featuring at the Nigerian event for the first time. Agbavon K. and Missewou D, though they didn’t find the Nigerian course an easy ground, it was a test they had not had in a long time.
The event was also parading several other new players especially from the Nigerian PGA members who were un-leashing most of their twenty new January Qualifying School intakes in their first show as professionals.
First of all, it was the show by former Nigerian Head of state, HE General Dr. Yakubu Gowon (GCFR). He performed the ceremonial tee-off in a way that was perhaps his biggest public tie with golf.
Day 2
Now 36 holes have passed by and the players are digging deeper into the winning purse ($62, 000 USD) at stake.
Along the line, big names are fallen. Gboyega Oyebanji one of the most celebrated players in previous season was the biggest casualty, crashing with 80, 79 while other winners on the Ikoyi Course, Lateef Lasisi, Dominic Andrew and Ghana’s famed Victor Brave Mensah all missed the mid way cut.
On the leaderboard, Ali Abdullahi had tied Oche Odoh for the leading spot at +2. Emos Korblah of Ghana, Kenyan Dismas Indiza and Nigerian Bashiru Bakare lurked one stroke behind.
Day 3
By now, the supposed rivalry between Oche Odoh and Ali Abdullahi (in the leading set) had spun up Korblah as the new leader. Abdullahi had his worst round and dipped his chances with 78 (after earlier 70, 74).
Oche still counts with his 75 which he said came from “cold putters” but other players had begun extending their chances too. Sneaky Umoh Edet (defending champion) had crept up to joint fourth with Ghana’s Vincent Togah and Bashiru Bakare not letting off Mike Ubi, Christian Godfrey and Gift Willy.
Day 4
Dismas Indiza wins with 290, six over par (73, 73, 73, 71) leaving Oche Odoh to rue the early final round lead he could not stamp on.
Luckless final round also trailed Korblah who wasted the chance to take the game when it fell on him. His painful last hole bogie relegated him further to joint sixth place.
Bashiru Bakare and Vincent Togah playing in the set ahead of the leaders hopped to the second spot cashing in on the pressure and wasted chances behind them.
